 India is a vast and diverse country, where a large part of the population lives in villages. To ensure that governance reaches even the remotest areas, the system of Panchayati Raj was introduced. At the heart of this system lies the Panchayat Election – a powerful tool of local self-governance. How Panchayat Elections Started: The roots of Panchayati Raj can be traced back to ancient India. But it was formally introduced in modern India through the 73rd Constitutional Amendment Act, 1992, which made it a constitutional requirement.
